iPhone robot is ambulatory, still wants physical keyboard
Robots are awesome, we can all probably agree on that. Robots made from iPhones are basically an extension of that awesomeness, crossed with an element of unimaginable, ludicrous fun, which is why we’re pleasantly surprised to see that such a device finally exists. Using a jailbroken iPhone 3G running some Ruby code, an Arduino CPU, a TA7291P motor, and 4 AA batteries, the creator is able to pilot the bot via WiFi from a nearby computer, all the while recording its view for later playback. The results look pretty cool, and trust us, you’re definitely going to want to check out the video after the break. As far as we can tell, by the way, the lyrics to the song in the video are “iPhone with keyboard,” which seemingly refers to this, um… iPhone with keyboard we saw earlier today — apparently from the hands of the same craftsman, who seems like a very busy guy. Especially if he wrote the song!

Jailbroken iPhone 3G gets external keyboard, says "Hello"
If you’re one of those people always complaining about the iPhone keyboard (the lack of one, that is), then this is probably a vital piece of news, even if it’s not totally practical. Or practical in any way, actually. Some very enterprising citizen of the world seems to be running a chunk of Ruby code on his jailbroken iPhone 3G, which allows it to recognize what appears to be a Palm / Visor external keyboard connected via a custom cable. The results of this intense bit of modification? Well — not much, honestly, but it’s still kinda cool. “Hello Keyboard,” indeed. Check out the video of it in action after the break.

Marware’s Game Grip for the iPhone complicates what should be simple
We’ve seen a few accessories for augmenting the gaming experience on the iPhone which would give the device awesome functions similar to a game controller, such as the elusive and yet-to-materialize iControlPad and the totally fake JoyPod. Well, Marware’s Game Grip is sort of like that — silicone sleeves that your phone fits into — except that it doesn’t actually do anything beyond providing ‘handles’ for your phone while you game. Oh, and it exists. So let’s refer to it as the ‘enjoyment enabler’ of your iPhone 3G or iPod touch 2G which can be used with headphones (just like normal), can be charged while gaming (just like normal), and has a ‘cord management system’ (kind of not normal). If that’s not enough to convince you to reach for your wallet, the “lifetime guarantee” and ludicrously zany look of the thing will probably get you to bite… it’s $49.99 and available for pre-order right now.

AT&T officially delivers free WiFi to BlackBerry / iPhone users
We thought we’d heard the last of this whole AT&T / Starbucks WiFi deal yesterday, but alas, we were terrifically mistaken. AT&T has come forth today with two fluffy press releases that flesh out the details, and amazingly, there are some inclusions that we weren’t made aware of yesterday. For starters, all iPhone / iPhone 3G customers will now have free (and seemingly limitless) access to AT&T WiFi hotspots across the US — we’re talking Starbucks, Barnes & Noble, the whole lot. Additionally, the carrier has welcomed select BlackBerry users — that’s the Bold for now, the Pearl 8120 / 8820 “later this year” — into the same deal, though the official verbiage mentions that an “unlimited data plan” is required. If you didn’t make the cut this time, fret not — AT&T has plans to invite “more mobile devices” into the fold here shortly.

Greatest projector / iPhone clone combo handset in the world now up for sale
Look, here’s what you need to do: reach into the appropriate pocket on your personage, take out your phone, and throw it into the nearest wall. It sucks. The N70 from Lanye (or ChinaKing, or… somebody from China), which we’ve drooled over previously, is a candybar phone with a 2.4-inch screen, Bluetooth 2.0, and a little bit of dual-band GSM. Oh, and a built-in projector. And an interface that almost perfectly mirrors that of the iPhone with the addition of voice recording and MMS. It’s awesome, and it’s now available for import for a mere $345. A bargain at any price.

Sonos Controller for iPhone and Software 2.7 bring Last.fm, internet radio and ‘the future’ to your existing setup
We’ve been griping about the limitations of the existing wireless Sonos controller for just about as long as Sonos has been pumping them out — not that it’s a horrible chunk of hardware, just that we love to gripe, and the lack of good text input is extremely limiting in these modern times of limitless content to surf through. Well, the problem’s been solved, at least for iPhone and iPod touch users, and in typical Sonos fashion the solution’s free. Starting today Sonos will be offering a free Sonos Controller app on Apple’s App Store, which can handle just about every function the existing controller can, with the additional convenience of a touch interface and an on-screen keyboard. Multi-room control, Napster and Rhapsody, your own music library — it’s all here, thanks to the magic of WiFi. Sonos even saw it fit to pack a general software update (Sonos Software 2.7) which includes fifteen thousand internet radio stations and Last.fm integration. The primary limitation to iPhone control is the fact that you’re relying on your home’s WiFi instead of that schmancy mesh network Sonos products employ, but that’s a small price to pay for usability. iPhone software 2.2 features Google Street View, mass transit directions
The T-Mobile G1’s Google Maps Street View implementation is one of the slickest features of the first Android phone, but it looks like Apple’s going to keep feature parity — the latest builds of iPhone OS 2.2 seeded to developers have Street View, as well as the ability to give mass transit directions. That’s pretty useful for cityfolk like us — and we’re also stoked that line-in audio is now supported in the SDK, giving devs the ability to create voice recorders and other interesting audio apps. Of course, there’s no word on when 2.2 will actually arrive, but until then we suppose we’ll live with regular, non-data-augmented streets. Lots of screenshots of the new features at the read link.

iBone chew toy gives sneak peek at dog-centric App Store
We’re going out on a limb here and assuming that the Haute Diggity Dog iBone comes jailbroken and ready to rock, or at least that’s the impression we get from checking out that heretofore unseen bevy of icons. Customized for the “tech savvy dog on the go,” this here iPhone chew toy gives dear Fido access to bark / hand-shake training, posture lessons, Washington Huskies sports updates (it’s the Clemson Tigers in all honesty, but work with us here), a mysterious fitness app and a bone application for times when supper just seems too far away. You know your pup’s worth the $11.95, you just know it.

Microsoft waves dismissive, bloated hand at iPhone sales figures
Microsoft’s Robbie Bach feigned an uninterested yawn at Apple’s 6.9 million iPhones figure in an interview with BusinessWeek the other day. He wasn’t particularly insulting of the product, but didn’t think the number means too much in the long run. “Apple had a big launch of a new product, and they launched at scale in a lot of new countries with a lot of new [wireless] operators. This quarter, RIM is having its big launch, and at some point we’ll have our big launch. We’ll have to see where things normalize.” While that statement is encouraging for the fact that it semi-implies that Windows Mobile 7 is supposed to be released at “some point,” we’re not sure we’re picking up what Robbie is putting down — 6.9 million of a single device seems to imply a bit more than “launch buzz.” Things devolved quickly when Bach started spouting about how carriers want a balanced ecosystem. That may be true, but consumers are the ones that buy the phones, and if their RAZR buying habits are any indication, “ecosystem” isn’t their top priority.
