Autism is a neurological disease the falls under the umbrella of Pervasive Developmental Disorder or PDD. Autism is on the rise in America today with an estimated one in one hundred fifty children being affected each year. The areas of the brain that are affected by this disease are the ones that deal with social skills and communication. Autism is most frequently diagnosed in the early years of a child’s life and there are no known cures at this time. Autism can occur within any family regardless of race, social status or ethnicity. A child who has autism will usually react in a much more severe manner, more often than is normal and because of very minor incidents.

Living with autism can be difficult for family members so it is important to understand how to deal with it. Also, remember that the child who has the disease is having a much more difficult time. Because their communication processes are not as developed, they can easily become frustrated. Many children and adults with the disorder are withdrawn and have trouble in social situations. Customized treatment plans can be adopted according to the individual child. These may include behavioral plans, life skills, communication techniques and sometimes even medication.

If you suspect your child has autism it is very important to get a diagnosis as early as possible. Although there is no cure for the disease, there are treatments available that will help a child become acclimated to society and enable the child to function reasonably well in society. The faster treatments can be started; the better off the child will be in later years of life. Depending on the severity of the problem some children can grow up to lead completely normal lives on their own. Others will have to have some type of assistance for the remainder of their lives.
