Excessive sweating

July 11, 2008 on 10:06 am | In Body Care |

You don’t have to be in hot weather to sweat right? Normally things that make people sweat are hot weather, workouts, emotional triggers such as anger or fear and pungent food. But unfortunately there are some of us who walk around like mobile coolants with perpetual sweating. We don’t need any of the causes to sweat; if we have to use Rene Descartes formula of existence, in our case it would be, “I sweat, therefore I am”!!!

The medical term for excessive sweating is Hyperhidrosis. Some of us have this problem of excessive sweating only in specific parts of our body. While others are even more gifted!!! Their entire body will be sweating profusely irrespective of the weather conditions or other external stimuli.
Life can get real complicated with this problem; we will automatically reduce our socializations because our sweaty-self also gets very self-conscious about the odour that we emit. No amount of deodorant will work, in spite of a huge monthly budget that we set aside for deodorants and perfumes we seem to be fighting an absolutely losing battle.

There are number of treatments that are available. Some of them can be really expensive and there are also some affordable treatments. High-powered antiperspirants seem to help some of us but for most ‘moving fountains’ it may do no good. How about Botox? They say it works well most of the time and can be effective for about 9 months at its best. Probably a combination of Botox and heavy-duty antiperspirants will do some good. Summer can be a terrible period and would certainly require a few visits to the dermatologist.

Did you know drinking a lot of water can help you cool your system and it can reduce your body odour? Many people have to just survive with useful tips like these because some of the treatments are simply not affordable. The medical field is yet to identify the real cause of excessive sweating; all that we have in terms of causes are only theories.

Some surgical procedures seem to give permanent solutions. To prevent excessive sweating in hands ETS or endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy is performed and in this procedure, nerve ganglia in the chest area is either clamped or burned or snipped off completely. The problem here is that it causes sandpaper hands because a certain amount of sweating is essential for our body and skin but when the nerves responsible are severed it totally stops the sweating process leading to dryness of skin. So ETS cannot be a healthy remedy.

Lumbar sympathectomy is meant for excessive sweating of feet. The respective nerves in the lumbar region are clipped here and this method is used only as a last resort.

Another interesting and effective surgery is sweat gland suction. Here they reduce the size of the sweat glands. When the size of the sweat glands is reduced the amount of sweat produced too is proportionately reduced. Around 25 to 30% of the sweat glands are removed to see reasonable improvement.
