whitening teeth

Most tooth whitening products use a form of peroxide as the active whitening ingredient. Glycerin is commonly mixed with peroxide to create a gel that can sit in a tray or on a strip. While trays and strips can be effective vehicles to hold the whitening agent against the teeth, they also create a barrier between the teeth and saliva during the whitening process. This prevents proper tooth hydration and can cause the tooth sensitivity that up to 60 percent of people who whiten their teeth experience.

While in-office teeth whitening treatments can be very effective, they can also be very costly and time consuming. The procedure can run anywhere from $400-$800 and may require more than one office visit of 30-60 minutes each. During these treatments a bleaching agent is applied to teeth, and a special light can be used to enhance the effectiveness of the bleach.

Your dentist can also show you how to whiten your teeth at home with professional, custom-fit trays, which usually costs $200-$400. Patients are usually molded for a mouth guard in the office which is then taken home and filled with a peroxide based gel to bleach teeth. These products are typically meant to be worn overnight for 1-2 weeks or twice a day for two weeks. Both types of professional tooth whitening treatments can cause patients to have severe tooth sensitivity.TOP

If professional teeth whitening seems too costly, there are a number of much less expensive over-the-counter treatments available. However, there are so many different products that it can be difficult to choose which one is for you. Most of these products contain similar ingredients and all promise to make teeth whiter. Now let’s look at what they don’t promise:
  • How many shades whiter will your teeth get?
  • Do you have to wait days or even weeks to see results?
  • Will your teeth become painfully sensitive?

GENERAL FAQ
Am I a candidate for tooth whitening?
Yellowish colored teeth usually respond better to whitening procedures than brownish or grayish colored teeth. Consult your dentist if you have moderate to severe gum disease or dental caries. Also consult your dentist before use on children under the age of 12. If you have allergies always make sure to carefully read the ingredients. If you are pregnant or nursing, consult with your doctor before using any tooth whitening product.
What causes tooth discoloration?
Tooth discoloration is actually staining caused by chemicals that bond to the tooth. Staining can be either extrinsic, on the layer covering the tooth surface (the acquired pellicle), or intrinsic, within or on the surface of the tooth (comprised of enamel and dentin). Extrinsic stains are usually caused by food and drink (such as red wine, coffee, tea, certain fruits and vegetables, etc) or tobacco sticking to the acquired pellicle. Intrinsic stains can be caused by a variety of things such as high fluoride intake, antibiotics, and chemicals which penetrate within the enamel and dentine. Most extrinsic staining can be removed through routine brushing, flossing, and dentist visits, while intrinsic staining requires the use of peroxide tooth whitening products.
How does tooth whitening work?
Most tooth whitening products use a form of peroxide as the active whitening ingredient. Glycerin and Carbopol are commonly mixed with peroxide to create a gel that can sit in a tray or on a strip. While trays and strips can be effective vehicles to hold the teeth whitening gel against the teeth, they also create a barrier between the tooth and saliva during the whitening process. This prevents proper tooth hydration and can cause the tooth sensitivity that up to 60 percent of people who whiten their teeth experience. Luster eliminated the need for a tray or strip (therefore allowing proper tooth hydration) by creating a patented gel formula that stays on teeth for the duration needed. The Luster Whitening Light provides a small amount of heat to enhance the effectiveness of the Luster Super Whitening Gel and deliver faster results than all other home teeth whitening products available.
Is tooth whitening safe?
Yes. Both the Luster Weekend Whitening System and Luster 1 Hour White have been independently clinically proven to be safe and effective. Luster is safe for tooth enamel and though no subjects in our independent clinical studies experienced tooth sensitivity, some mild gum irritation may occur. If gum or mouth irritation occurs, stop using Luster and consult your dentist. When whitening teeth, be sure to always check the label on any over-the-counter product before using it to make sure it will not harm your tooth enamel. If you have experienced tooth sensitivity in the past, also be sure to look for teeth whitening products that will not cause tooth sensitivity. Many products state right on the package that they may cause tooth sensitivity. Also, if you are considering a dentist tooth whitening treatment, check with your dentist first to see if you may experience tooth sensitivity.
Will it affect my dental work?
No. Luster, and all tooth whitening products, only whitens natural teeth, not dental work such as crowns, caps, fillings and veneers. Luster will not harm dental work.
How white will my teeth get?
Your results with tooth whitening will depend on your type and level of staining, your natural tooth shade, and the product you are using. The best tooth whitening results you will see with any safe whitening procedure will be as white as your natural tooth shade. (The blinding-white smiles you see on many Hollywood stars are often veneers.) Most OTC products simply promise “whiter teeth” without stating an exact shade difference. Luster Oral Care products completed two independent clinical trials and found that Luster 1 Hour White lightened teeth up to six shades with an average of five shades. Luster Weekend Tooth Whitening System lightened teeth six shades on average.
How long will my teeth stay white?
The duration of your results is based on the results themselves as well as your personal habits. If your teeth get 8 shades lighter it will take longer for them to return to their pre-whitened shade than if they only get 2 shades whiter. To help maintain your results it is recommended you avoid the following substances: coffee, tea, red wine, cola, red sauces, blue or black berries, mustard, ketchup, tobacco products, soy sauces.
What’s the difference between Luster and all the other over-the-counter tooth whitening products?
Luster Whitening products have been proven to whiten teeth up to six shades (average is five shades). Other OTC tooth whitening products do not state an exact shade difference with use of their products. These products also take 5 to 14 days to see full results. With Luster 1 Hour White you will see full results in one hour, and with the Weekend Tooth Whitening System you will see full results in three days. Luster products are clinically proven to be safe and effective. In independent clinical studies, not one person experienced tooth sensitivity with Luster 1 Hour White or Luster Weekend Tooth Whitening System. Other OTC products may cause tooth sensitivity in up to sixty percent of users. Read the label carefully before purchasing any at home product for tooth whitening – on some you will notice the tooth sensitivity warning right on the box!
